House Caswell of Bitterbridge is a noble house from the
Reach. Their seat is Bitterbridge, where the Roseroad meets the river Mander.
Their blazon is a yellow centaur with bow on white. The Caswells carry the
title Defender of the Fords.
History
Orbert Caswell served as Lord Commander of the Night's
Watch.
During the Battle Beneath the Gods Eye in 43 AC, Lord
Caswell joined Lords Merryweather and Peake in marching from the Reach to add
their levies to King Maegor I Targaryen's host against Prince Aegon the
Uncrowned. While Lords Merryweather and Caswell advanced against Aegon's host
from the south, Maegor quickly killed his young nephew and the battle turned
into a rout.
During the Dance of the Dragons, Tom Flowers, the Bastard of
Bitterbridge, was one of the commanders of the blacks during the Battle on the
Honeywine. He was burned alive by the dragon Tessarion when Prince Daeron the
Daring joined the battle.[6] Daeron began the sack of Bitterbridge after the
death of Prince Maelor Targaryen. Lady Caswell hanged herself from her castle's
gatehouse.
House Caswell fought for the Targaryens during the First

Lady Melissa Blackwood, nicknamed Missy, was a member of
House Blackwood during the reign of Aegon IV Targaryen. She was the sixth of
Aegon's nine mistresses, and the best loved of them.
Appearance and Character
Melissa was slender of frame, and pretty.
She had a kind heart, was generous and modest, and was well
loved.
History
Melissa became the sixth mistress of King Aegon IV Targaryen
early in the King's reign, in 172 AC, replacing Lady Barba Bracken, who had
been sent from court in disgrace. Even though she was Aegon's mistress,
Melissa's kind heart and generosity led her to be befriended by Aegon's
sister-wife Queen Naerys, her brother Prince Aemon the Dragonknight, and her
son Prince Daeron.
Melissa was slender of frame, but Barba had been buxom. When
Barba was heard to joke that Melissa was flat as a boy, King Aegon, who
previously had renamed the hills known as the Mother's Teats after Barba
("Barba's Teats"), named the mountains for Melissa instead and
granted them to House Blackwood. Members of House Bracken still refer to the
hills as "Barba's Teats", while members of House Blackwood still call
them "Missy's Teats".
Melissa was King Aegon's mistress for five years, during
which she gave birth to three children: two daughters, Mya and Gwenys, and a
son, Brynden Rivers. Brynden would later be able to maintain close relations at
court, due to the fact that his mother had been well loved during her time
there, even after her dismissal.
Lord Bracken, with the help of his daughter Barba, groomed
his younger daughter Lady Bethany to replace Melissa. In 177 AC, King Aegon
visited Stone Hedge to see his bastard son by Barba, Aegor Rivers, and Bethany
caught his eye and returned with him to King's Landing.
A statue of Melissa can be found in the godswood of
Raventree Hall, the seat of House Blackwood.

Dagon Greyjoy, called the Last Reaver, was Lord of the Iron
Islands and Lord Reaper of Pyke during the reign of King Aerys I Targaryen. He
last sat in the Seastone Chair "almost a hundred years" before the
events of A Song of Ice and Fire.
History
By 211 AC, Dagon and his ironborn were raiding along the
Sunset Sea and the western coast of Westeros. They raided as far south as the
Arbor, attacking and burning Little Dosk and carrying off half the wealth of
Fair Isle and a hundred women. Dagon sent ironborn north, where Lord Beron
Stark was gathering swords to drive him off, and Lord Tybolt Lannister was
building ships to fight him on the seas. Dagon retreated to Pyke whenever his
adversaries retaliated. Erik Ironmaker sailed with Dagon, who was eventually
defeated by House Targaryen.

House Mormont of Bear Island is a noble house of the north,
one of the principal families sworn to House Stark. Their seat is at Bear
Island, located in the Bay of Ice northwest of Winterfell. Their blazon is a
black bear over a green wood and their motto is "Here We Stand".
House Mormont is one of the few houses to have an ancestral
weapon of Valyrian steel: a bastard sword called Longclaw. However, due to Bear
Island's lack of valuable resources, the Mormonts are a rather poor house.
Their hall is made of huge logs, surrounded by an earthen palisade. On the gate
is a carving of a woman in a bearskin with a child in one arm suckling at her
breast and a battleaxe in the other.
History
Origin
The Mormonts are an old house with a proud and honorable
reputation. According to northern histories, Rodrik Stark, a King in the North,
gave Bear Island to the Mormonts after winning the isle in a wrestling match
from a driftwood king of the ironborn. Skeptical scholars think it more likely
the rival kings wrestled "with words".
The Mormonts' lands are cold and poor. Like the other women
of Bear Island, the women of House Mormont learned how to defend themselves
from ironmen and wildlings.
House Mormont has possessed Longclaw, a Valyrian steel
sword, for five centuries.
House Targaryen
Lord Torrhen Stark sent a few longships from Bear Island to
aid King Aegon I Targaryen in his campaign against the Iron Islands.
Lord Alaric Stark was wed to a Mormont. According to Alaric,
his wife made a cloak from the skins of two wolves she killed when she was
twelve years old.
Jeor and Jorah
Lord Jeor Mormont arranged a marriage for his son, Jorah, to
a girl from House Glover when Jorah was still relatively young. While the marriage
lasted ten years, the couple had no children. Jorah's wife eventually died
after not being able to recover from her third childbirth. By the time she
died, Lord Jeor had joined the Night's Watch, where he rose quickly through the
ranks and was elected Lord Commander in 288 AC. It is likely that Jeor had
joined the Night's Watch prior to Robert's Rebellion (282 AC-283 AC). When Lord
Eddard Stark called his banners, Jorah joined the rebels and fought in the
Battle of the Trident in 283 AC.
Jorah also fought in Greyjoy's Rebellion in 289 AC, earning
fame in the siege of Pyke and knighthood from King Robert I Baratheon. He met
and fell in love with Lynesse Hightower at the tourney at Lannisport, held to
celebrate Rovert's victory over the Iron Islands. After winning the jousting,
Jorah crowned Lynesse his queen of love and beauty, and asked her father, Lord
Leyton Hightower, for her hand in marriage, which was granted. However, life on
Bear Island differed significantly from life at Oldtown, and Jorah spend all of
his money to keep Lynesse happy. Finally, in 293 AC, after trying to sell
poachers to a Tyroshi slaver to increase his income, Jorah fled from the north
to the Free Cities with his wife upon learning that Lord Eddard Stark of
Winterfell was coming to Bear Island to pass on the king's judgement. Jorah and
Lynesse lived in exile in Lys, with Jorah becoming a sellsword after they ran
out of money in half a year. However, while he was away fighting on the Rhoyne,
Lynesse became the concubine of a merchant prince, Tregar Ormollen. Jorah was
exiled from Lys when he returned to the Free City, continuing on to Volantis.
Maege Mormont, Jorah's aunt and Jeor's sister, inherited
Bear Island after Jorah fled the Seven Kingdoms. Her heir is her eldest
daughter, Dacey. Longclaw, left behind by Jorah, was returned to Jeor by Lady
Maege.

Notes
Jeor states that he
has been in the Night's Watch longer than Alliser Thorne, who joined the Watch
at the conclusion of Robert's Rebellion (A Game of Thrones, Tyrion III),
implying that Jeor had joined prior to the war's start. While Jeor states that
he had been Lord Commander at the time Alliser joined, more recent sources,
both canon (A Storm of Swords, Jon I & Jon VIII) and semi-canon (George
R.R. Martin's A World of Ice and Fire) contradict this statement, making at
least the fact that he was Lord Commander at the time invalid. It is still
likely, however, that Jeor had already joined the Night's Watch at the time.

House Lantell is a minor house from the westerlands. They
are said to be distant kin to House Lannister of Casterly Rock. Like other kin
of House Lannister, such as houses Lanny and Lannett, they are settled at Lannisport.
History
As some point in the Age of Heroes, House Lannister had
grown so numerous that Casterly Rock could not contain all of them. Instead of
tunneling out new passages and halls in the Rock, the members of the lesser
branches left to make their home in a village a scant mile away. This village
eventually grew into Lannisport.

House Hollard was an ancient and noble house of the
crownlands sworn to House Darklyn of Duskendale. Following the Defiance of
Duskendale, almost the entire House was executed at King Aerys II Targaryen's
command. They blazoned their arms with barry red and pink, three golden crowns
on a black chief.
History
Age of Heroes
During the Age of Heroes, the Hollards were the bannermen
and closest allies of House Darklyn. In these ancient times House Hollard had
three daughters wedded to Darklyn kings.
The Defiance of
Duskendale
The Defiance of Duskendale took place during the reign of
King Aerys II Targaryen when, according to the smallfolk, Lord Denys Darklyn
was convinced by his wife, Lady Serala of Myr, to take Aerys captive. According
to semi-canon sources, the defiance was in fact caused by Lord Denys's refusal
to pay taxes after Aerys denied his demands of certain rights for his subjects
and a town charter for Duskendale.
During the imprisonment of the king, the master-at-arms of
the Dun Fort, Ser Symon Hollard, slew Ser Gwayne Gaunt of the Kingsguard. The
Hand of the King, Lord Tywin Lannister, assembled an army that could easily
storm the town, but Lord Denys menaced that he would kill the king as soon as
the attack started. Aerys was held prisoner for half a year with Tywin's army
waiting outside Duskendale.
The situation remained invariable until Ser Barristan Selmy
of the Kingsguard entered the Dun Fort and rescued the king. Having lost his
hostage, Lord Denys had no other option then to surrender at once. He bent the
knee and begged for mercy, but the king demanded his head and all his family's.
House Hollard, which had served House Darklyn during the
defiance and had a close relationship with their lords, were attainted and had
their lands taken, the castle torn down, and its members also executed. Only
young Dontos Hollard was spared because Ser Barristan asked for mercy.

Dontos Hollard, who has become known as Ser Dontos the Red,
stays at court in King's Landing during the War of the Five Kings.
A Clash of Kings
Intending to ride in the tourney on King Joffrey's name day,
Dontos's first match is against Lothor Brune. However, Dontos is too drunk,
arriving in the lists unarmored and hardly clothed. King Joffrey I Baratheon
takes this as a personal insult and commands that Dontos be put to death via
drowning in a cask of wine. However, the pleading of Sansa Stark saves his life
and Dontos is stripped of his knighthood and made a fool in motley instead.
After secretly being contacted by Petyr Baelish, Dontos
leaves Sansa a note and promises to help her escape. Drawing inspiration from
the tales of Florian and Jonquil, he pleads to serve her and asks for patience
for they can only escape at the right time. Dontos tells Sansa that she will be
freed the night of Joffrey's wedding and gives her a hairnet laced with
amethysts.
A Storm of Swords
Several meetings in the godswood later, Sansa tells Ser
Dontos of the plot to marry her to Willas Tyrell. Dontos attends the marriage
of Sansa to Tyrion Lannister, where he is used as a footstool by Tyrion when he
goes to place his cloak around the shoulders of Sansa. After the death of King
Joffrey - poisoned with the Strangler contained in one of the amethysts of
Sansa's hairnet - at his wedding to Margaery Tyrell, Dontos takes Sansa away
during the confusion.
Ser Dontos escapes the Red Keep with Sansa and delivers her
to Petyr Baelish, who had been waiting for them on a ship in Blackwater Bay.
Once Sansa has been rowed out and delivered onto the ship, Dontos asks for his
payment of 10,000 golden dragons, as promised by Petyr. Instead, Petyr orders
Dontos killed, and he is shot with crossbows. When it is done, Ser Lothor Brune
tosses a torch on top of the corpse, burying the secret with the drunkard and
finally ending the Hollard line.

him.
